Want to know what your life could be like if you joined the Clever Copywriting Community?

We’ve asked a few of our members to tell their stories and share their wins since becoming a Copy beast.

Tell us about yourself

I’m a former corporate marketer turned copywriter.

I help service-based businesses who sell to other businesses with copywriting and content marketing strategy.

I started my business in 2020 (I know, timing) but despite bushfires, a pandemic, and parenting little people, it’s going better than I ever imagined – thanks to TCCS!

What made you decide to join TCCS?

I had thought about venturing into the copywriting world on and off for many years. After having my second baby, I was ready to work but didn’t want to work full time or commute.

So, I thought it was time to try it.

But I didn’t know where to start or where I’d find the confidence to get my first client. I didn’t even know if this thing called copywriting was something I could even make happen.

I’d had TCCS and Kate Toon on my radar for a little while. I’d heard so many success stories from people in the group.

It wasn’t a matter of why join, but when. I wanted some kind of road map to help make this vague dream a reality. With TCCS, I got it – and a whole lot more.

Do you have any reservations before joining?

I didn’t have many, to be honest.

I’d tried some of Kate’s freebies which had so much value, I was sure the membership would deliver.

Any reservations I had were really around myself and wondering if I could put myself out there and do this.

What’s been your experience of your membership? Have you enjoyed it?

The community wasn’t the biggest drawcard when joining, but it’s the biggest reason I stay.

The TCCS community is a standout part of the membership. It’s full of smart, generous people from all walks of life who willingly share experiences and perspectives. You can ask any question, and someone will jump in with the answer you need.

They’ll also be your biggest cheerleaders. Technically, we’re all ‘competitors’ but the vibe couldn’t be any further from it.

TCCS members want everyone to succeed, and we all help each other be better copywriters and business owners.

If you’re just getting started, they can provide a huge source of inspiration. They’ll show you it can be done and motivate you to keep going on the tougher days.

Beyond the community, I love the Masterclasses. They help me stay up to date with the latest trends and best practices. Run by people who are doing the thing they teach every day, so you get practical education that makes a real difference.

And of course, there’s Kate. A copywriting, business-owning, SEO guru-ing superstar who is generous with her time, knowledge, and advice. She tells it like it is and is the boss/coach/butt-kicker we never knew we needed.

Can you share some improvements to your pricing, client relationships, process, or skills since you joined?

When I joined, I had zero clients, a draft website, and the lack of confidence that comes after being at home with a baby and toddler for 1.5 years.

For the first few months, I just watched the Masterclasses and observed Facebook chats. I was learning and preparing myself mentally before officially ‘launching’ in January 2020.

Since then, I’ve:

  • Signed up 23 clients and subbed for 3 TCCS Copy beasts.
  • Made 80% of the income from my last job.
  • Learned to pitch, getting a 70% response rate from my TCCS job board pitches, and earning over $8k in jobs. In other words, 13 x the annual membership fee.
  • By the end of the year, I’d built a decent portfolio, had multiple clients come back for more work, and started getting referrals from past clients (the best kind).

But that’s just the numbers. I’ve learned about selling, negotiating, managing clients, presenting my work, keeping clients happy, what to charge, how long copywriting projects (usually) take, managing my mindset, and more.

The best bit is that this learning comes in so many ways.

Discussions on Facebook, Masterclasses, and live videos from members of the group – I’ve learned more than in any formal learning environment. And as a bonus, it’s relevant and practical.

Final advice for new (or experienced) copywriters thinking of joining?

If you’re serious about making a copywriting career happen, a TCCS membership will get you there faster.

Without it, it would have taken me years to get to where I am now.

But more likely, I would have just given up.

Stop thinking and start doing.

Taking action every day, even if it’s small, is the only way to get your copywriting gig off the ground.

And join TCCS, it’ll be the best money you’ll spend
